For those of you new to the blog, hello! I'm Shoshy! (Or Shoshana Bratton, if you fancy getting formal!) I'm an illustrator with a love of watercolours and modern calligraphy, On 4th December I hosted two workshops at the Etsy Made Local 2016 Christmas market with the London Local Etsy Team. It was a pop up event, though lots of market goers asked if it would be a regular weekly event, which I took as a sign that it went down pretty well with the locals.
The modern calligraphy and watercolours workshop also went down a treat. The classes sold out completely months in advance with a waiting list for both sessions. My students all had brilliant ideas and produced some beautiful work! I really enjoyed seeing everyone's different approaches to the same task, especially seeing the students work out different compositions in modern calligraphy with their names, inspirational quotes or phrases. The watercolour section of the class also yielded some very interesting results, with some students opting for very controlled detailed work, and others taking a freer, looser, wilder approach. My modern calligraphy with watercolours workshops are really about encouraging each individual to find their own style and way of working so that the calligraphy and watercolours has your own personality in it.
To help the students with inspiration, I used books, such as Modern Calligraphy by Molly Super Thorpe and examples of my own work, e.g. two different examples of modern calligraphy alphabets and set out a display of wedding stationery examples I've designed where I've paired modern calligraphy with watercolour painting.
My students used brush pens for the first part of the modern calligraphy section, then went on to use paintbrushes to work in watercolours, learning the basic techniques, and discovering how the paintbrushes could also be used in a similar way to the brush pens, creating that lovely hand lettering, modern calligraphy style with colour.
This Save The Date piece of bespoke wedding stationery that I designed for a couple getting married earlier this year shows an example of how you can mix watercolours and modern calligraphy. This was one of the examples I had included for inspiration. The hand lettering of the modern calligraphy was done in watercolours, as was the delicate botanical illustrations surrounding the modern calligraphy.
