Modern calligrapher meets modern ceramicist
One thing I love about London is that it is full of creative and talented people, if you know where to find them! One of my London based friends is Virginia Balistreri, an Italian ceramicist. I first met her at a London Local Team Market and was immediately enchanted by her stall, ViCeramics. It was full of beautiful hand thrown ceramics using her handmade glazes. It included hanging planters; gorgeous mug sets and vases. Walking past a stall like that, it's very difficult not to wish you owned it all and marvel at this woman's undeniable talent!
Combining modern calligraphy and handthrown ceramics
Last week, much to my excitement, I collaborated with Virginia on a styled, tablescape photoshoot. She provided the ceramic table ware (of course!) I provided the styling, photography and took care of creating a couple of pieces of my modern calligraphy to finish it off. I had in mind an elegant but homely meal, with fresh, locally sourced, seasonal produce.
Keeping it simple
Since Virginia's ceramics had a lovely blue-green glaze and a very natural, earthy feel to them, I kept the styling simple with a bunch of blooms that were mostly blue, some lilac and a hint of pink for contrast, accompanied by lots of greenery. The table was finished with ivory coloured table linen and matching napkins.
Ceramics class in London
As well as selling her ceramics on Etsy, Virginia also teaches private lessons in ceramics in her London studio. I did a one off pottery wheel workshop recently in Japan, and have been very tempted since I've returned to book some lessons with Virginia here in London! I'm actually thinking my wife Meredith might like some lessons as birthday gift, but shhh! Don't tell Meredith!
Modern calligraphy and hand lettering workshop in London
My next modern calligraphy classes are currently being planned, but if you don't have the patience to wait until then, you can always get in touch with me for more information. You can also book me to host private modern calligraphy parties, workshops, corporate dos or blogger and PR events.
Modern calligraphy tools of the trade
I made all the calligraphy pieces shown in this blog post using a pointed oblique pen and India ink, but I also love working with Japanese brush pens or watercolour paintbrushes to create modern calligraphy. I can do modern calligraphy workshops with Japanese brush pens, watercolours or pointed dip pens, the choice is yours! If you'd like to know more about the difference between those, just let me know. I may do a separate blog post about all the different options at some point just to help you brush up on your knowledge (please excuse the terrible puns there, I couldn't resist!)
Have a great day, and don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions for me!
